During the two years of the pandemic, news media and common people alike were quick to report how the environment had started slowly rebuilding itself with many of the cities gaining back parts of the vegetation that they had lost during their urbanisation. Moreover, there were reportedly more flowers to be seen on trees and plants, and more butterflies and birds started showing up as a result of these. It was really awe-inspiring to watch the climatic impact that a few months of WFH had done on the environment. 

The largest city in South America - Sao Paulo is home to more than 45 million people. With a landmass greater than that of the U.K, Sao Paulo had a GDP of over 600 billion dollars, which forms one-third of the entire GDP of Brazil. Apart from these staggering numbers, Sao Paulo is also one of the World’s top 10 economies! But how do these numbers matter for innovation? Well, the magnificent city is innovating rapidly, giving birth to some incredible startups and attracting the attention of global investors. A couple of years back, a whopping 76% of the entire venture capital invested in Latin America was won by startups in Sao Paulo. The figures tell you a story - but how did the story shape the way it is today? How did Sao Paulo manage to gather so many startups and attract investors from around the world? Like most people with 60 years left on Earth (touch wood), I care about the future of the planet, and what we can do to lower our carbon footprint to make it more of a hospitable place to live. 

National Pollution Control Day is celebrated in India as an act of remembrance. December 2nd 2021, is observed as the 37th anniversary of the ‘Bhopal gas disaster’ where tragically a Methyl Isocyanate gas leak killed thousands, and a further half a million who were exposed to the toxic gas suffered injuries.

As remote working professionals, we could go on and on about the pros of working remotely. But did you know that working remotely has a positive impact on the environment? On average remote workers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel consumption, air pollution, single-use plastic and paper waste. By simply working remotely for a few days / week, we could make a big difference in battling the climate crisis.

The phrase ‘tech for good’ is something that has certainly risen in popularity in recent years. Perhaps even recent months. But have we forgotten about the literal meaning of the phrase? Is it now used as a way for organisations to tick a box when it comes to their green credentials, rather than using tech to create change?
